Safewording - How simple is it really?
We all accept the need for safewords in play. We discuss them prior, but find ourselves on occasion bewildered by their use, misuse and non-use. We don’t actually know whether we can safeword before a safeword is needed. There are all sorts of thoughts floating in our brains: it will get better any moment now, I am enjoying some of it so I should endure the other bits, nobody will ever play with me if I safeword, when should I actually do it, do I like not having control or am I experiencing abuse.
It is practically the same as saying ‘no’ while sex is happening. Sometimes the word ‘no’ reverberates in your mind, but nothing comes out. Only when you get home you realise that you’d been taken advantage of and have to deal with it on your own.
On the other side of the coin dominants/tops trust that the bottom/sub is ok if they are silent and don't safeword, only realising later that it wasn’t ok at all. Sometimes guilt and shame are overwhelming, and we stop playing for a while or forever, especially if the bottom/sub takes to social media.
How do we learn to overcome this hurdle?
