Humiliation and degradation are often bunched together in the BDSM vocabulary, i.e. I enjoy humiliation and degradation, giving or receiving. However, they are nothing like each other in practice. Brenee Brown looks at the words and actions we understand as belonging to humiliation and degradation from the point of view of the resulting emotions in the person these words and actions are aimed at. She lists shame, guilt, humiliation or embarrassment as possible outcomes. Brenee Brown discusses these in a general human interaction setting, however her research and findings can help us understand ourselves and others in a setting of consentual BDSM play of humiliation and degradation. Our discussion will focus on the following questions:

• How do I plan and execute a play session that would evoke a specific set of emotions, i.e. shame, guilt, humiliation or embarrassment, rather than unplanned and unpredicted ones?

• How can I predict the influence of my actions and words on my partner?

• How do I negotiate and provide aftercare for such a scene?

• How do I examine myself prior to such a session to make sure that I do not unintentionally hurt my own feelings?

• How do I prevent the actions and words I utter and the resulting emotions from leaking into my relationship and ruining it in the process?
